A two-month renovation project in Essen, Belgium, transformed a damp, mold-infested country house into a healthy, bright and luxurious retreat. Architectural changes included expanding the living space, adding an attic bathroom and building a new terrace. The interior was upgraded with high-end bathroom installation, a sleek kitchen with integrated appliances, herringbone floors and a premium paint finish.
It's one thing to make a home beautiful - and quite another to make it healthy, cozy and full of life. For our clients in Essen, their country home had a hidden challenge: constant humidity and mold, which compromised both comfort and charm. Our task was twofold: first heal the house from the inside out and then transform it into a beautiful retreat.
Building on a healthy foundation
First, we focused on the health of both the house and its occupants. The main problem was chronic moisture penetration, leading to high humidity and mold growth throughout the building.
In addition, the layout was suboptimal, with poor air circulation and inefficient use of space - limiting both functionality and access to natural light.
A vision of light and luxury brought to life
We developed a multi-phase strategic plan to address these challenges.
Phase 1: Environmental remediation and preparation.
The project began with a critical remediation phase:
Deployment of industrial dehumidifiers to stabilize interior humidity levels.
Complete mold remediation according to industrial protocols.
Phase 2: Architectural and structural modifications.
To improve the structure and layout, we made several significant changes:
Spatial reconfiguration: We moved a significant non-load-bearing wall to expand the main living space and create an open space. A new window opening was created for more natural daylight.
New bathroom construction: A full bathroom was built in the attic, requiring custom routes for plumbing, drainage and electrical systems.
Construction of patio: We built a new patio, complete with substructure and decking.
Phase 3: Interior and system integration.
This phase focused on modern installations and high-quality finishes:
Bathroom Installation: The loft bathroom was fitted with high-end plumbing fixtures and copper fittings. It includes a freestanding bathtub with a floor-mounted faucet, a walk-in shower with a glass screen and a wall-mounted double sink. The room features large marble-effect tiles and a geometric accent wall behind the sink.
Kitchen Installation: We installed a sleek kitchen with handleless cabinets, a composite marble countertop and fully integrated appliances. All mechanical and electrical systems were updated to match the custom layout.
Flooring and finishes: Durable herringbone floors were installed throughout. The walls were re-plastered to a Level 5 finish and finished with a multi-coat paint system. We also replaced all windows with high-quality units.
